Trek Challenge Ratings

Wilderness Expeditions has compiled a system of categorising the difficulty of our walks and treks based on a combination of the following criteria:

  • Terrain: steepness, surface (loose stones, uneven surfaces, vegetation cover, tracks and animal pad availability);
  • Temperature, humidity and other climatic conditions;
  • Remoteness and isolation; and
  • Expedition rigor: pace and duration.

We have developed the following assessment guide to assist clients to select a walk or trek of appropriate challenge and to match their fitness :

  • Comfortable:< 10 km per day (Normally day trips will fall into this classification)
    • Known/marked route or track
    • Easy vegetation
    • Undulating terrain
    • Cattle pads / defined pack tracks or motor vehicle tracks
    • Some wading to cross running rivers or creeks
    • Within motor vehicle access for most of route
    • Up to seven days duration

  • Moderate (extended walks):<16 km per day
    • Known & proven route
    • Undulating terrain
    • Dense or difficult vegetation in a few places
    • Some cattle pads
    • Some cross country movements
    • Remote locations, motor vehicle access restricted for 50% of route
    • Some wading to cross running rivers or creeks
    • Less than 10 days duration

  • Challenging (expeditions):>15 km per day
    • Known but not proven route
    • Undulating to steep terrain
    • Dense or difficult vegetation in places
    • Mix of cross country, cattle & horse pads some roads or vehicle tracks
    • Some deep river crossings involving deliberate fording
    • Remote locations and wilderness conditions for 50% or less of route – little or no motor vehicle access
    • Greater than 10 days duration

  • Demanding (expeditions):> 15 km per day
    • Path finding route
    • Undulating, steep and rough terrain
    • Dense or difficult vegetation in places
    • Cross country, cattle & horse pads, very few vehicle tracks
    • Difficult river crossings involving deliberate fording
    • Very remote and wilderness conditions for > 50% of route, very limited motor vehicle access
    • Greater than 10 days duration
